Where’s Brigthon? (1)

Dear Monsieur Henry,
Whilst strolling in Paris last week, I noticed this advertisement for your excellent establishment.  However, I would wish to draw your attention to the fact that, if you do indeed have a factory in Brighton as you state, you do not know our town well as you are clearly unable to spell its name correctly.
Yours faithfully
A concerned Brightonian

  1. I have a 1962 Esso road map of France, with cartography by the French firm of Blondel la Rougery, that makes the same error. It’s not uncommon for French road maps of this era to make spelling errors of place names along the South Coast of England, and it may be that they were deliberate “copyright traps”, so if anyone copied their maps and made the same mistake, it would be evidence of the copying. Or it may be that the French just didn’t care…

    • Many thanks, Ian, Brigthon is such a common error that it probably would not be ideal as a copyright protector – but there will certainly be one in there somewhere. It would be fascinating to know whether the Blondel le Rougery firm did their own map making or relied on some sort of collaboration with OS or Bartholomews, or even A to Z (even more likely than the other two) as A to Z were still flourishing in the 1960s.

If you are a map collector, happy collecting.
