East Street à la française 1845 to 1870 – Part I

In the middle of the 19th century, four enterprising French women worked hard to ensure that the ladies of Brighton remained at the height of fashion:  Madame Virginie, Madame Louise Mercier and Madame de Normanville (all three either milliners or dressmakers) and Madame Colette Jacob (French shoe warehouse).

Who were these women? And were they French?
